Agni, the “cooking” or transformative power of digestion, is like the flame of a gas-burning stove within your stomach, and our bodies innately regulate that heat depending on what we are cooking.
Ayurveda describes four states of Agni that correlate to four types of digestion:
Balanced: your flame is burning just right. You have an even appetite, consistent eating schedule, energy after meals and regular elimination.
Sharp: the fire in your stomach is turned up far too high. You experience excessive hunger, malabsorption, heartburn, ulcers and loose bowels.
Slow: the flame burns too low to properly break down your food. Your appetite is often poor, meaning you’re rarely hungry. When you do eat, there’s a dullness in the stomach and a sense of fatigue and sluggishness after meals.
Irregular: the flame fluctuates in an unpredictable manner, leaving you with a variable appetite that can be balanced one minute, then sharp or slow the next. Sure signs include gas, bloating and constipation.

When working with spices in our cooking, there are a few things to keep in mind to maximize the benefits they stand to offer us.
Sourcing: Favor organic and recently harvested spices. Buy whole spices because they have a longer shelf life.
Storage: Use airtight, non-plastic containers and keep them in a dry, dark pantry.
Digesting: Most spices require heat to activate their volatile compounds and to make them available to the body. When using spices in a cold dish, be sure to dry toast them first.
Cooking: Invest in a mortar and pestle or electric spice grinder. Combine heating and cooling spices to balance the metabolic effect on the body. Adjust the types and quantities for your doshas and for the seasons.
Cooling Spices: Use more in the summer, but they’re also good all year round. Pitta balancing and tridoshic. Ex: Caraway, Cardamom (green), Cilantro, Coriander, Fennel, Mint, Rose.
Slightly Heating Spices: Use all year round. Tridoshic, but omit or reduce if Pitta is high. Ex: Basil, Bay Leaf, Cinnamon, Cumin, Nutmeg, Parsley, Saffron, Thyme, Dill (fresh).
Heating Spices: Use more in the winter and spring. These are also Vata and Kapha balancing. Ex: Allspice, Chile, Clove, Fenugreek, Ginger, Mustard, Oregano, Paprika, Pepper, Turmeric.

"I was not educated about the practice of Reiki and its possible benefits. I had been experiencing a great deal of anxiety, stress, sleepless nights combined with physical pain exacerbated by recent health issues. Exercise, diet and meditation were indeed helpful but not sufficient. Reiki was mentioned as a potential aid. I was hesitant for a good while but finally made the decision to try.
